Will CRP Burn Affect Turkey Behavior

Unread postby ol_ben » Thu Apr 13, 2017 6:02 am

I will be hunting turkeys Saturday 4/15 through Thursday 4/20 in NW Illinois on the property shown below.

The owner will be burning CRP (see satellite image) today, and I'm wondering if that's going to require I do anything differently. I will be going out Friday afternoon/evening to try to determine where the turkeys are roosting, and am armed with where they typically are from other guys that have hunted turkey there. It's going to be very rainy Saturday, so I'm hoping I can set up on the ridge just above where the turkeys often are (assuming I can confirm they are) and try to call them out when the rain stops and they come up to get some sun, so the CRP burn should give me good visibility across the fields if nothing else.

I hunted crp a couple weeks after a burn for turkey. It was already starting to Green up and I shot a turkey in the woods that bordered it. I remember I found a bunch of turkey tracks in the burned area. They were probably feeding on the fresh green popping.

I would expect them to move for a short period. But then be back in a week or two...

Turkeys will show up in a burn down here before it stops smoking to pick up the roasted insects. They absolutely love them.

Move as in move off the property and/or out of calling range or just off a little ways? I'm betting the answer is that it could be either, but I'd like to know your opinion.

Yessir. I have seen this numerous times. The actual human activity will push them off for a day or so, but if they were in there to begin with, they will return quickly.

I would say just a short distance. They may avoid change. I see others have seen them come right in to burns though... I have seen them run to fields where manure gets spread as soon as the spreader stops... So, who knows really. They are really a pretty stupid bird. If it were not for there incredible eye sight they wouldn't be much of a challenge. There are guys on this site who are much better turkey hunters than me...

I've seen turkeys dust themselves in the ash several times, this won't help you in the rain. I think it's pretty difficult to blow a turkey's off a property, as Dan said, they really are pretty stupid.

They flock to the burns immediately down here and they are generally a magnet for a few weeks straight.

Thanks for the info, all. I would hunt either way, but it's nice to have a little extra confidence going in.
