Can't say I "prefer" one over the other because honestly all I've used are pumps. I've never seen a reason to change, however.
From my perspective, advantages of each:

Pump-
Cheaper
Can be loaded more quietly
Slightly more accommodating of ANY ammo

Auto-
Less recoil
Slightly faster follow up shot if needed

I gotcha. I've got a Benelli Nova & a Franchi Affinity which both accept Mobil chokes so I can use either. The Nova can shoot 3.5's is the only difference, both have 28" barrels.

Someone is going to cry foul on my take that pumps can be loaded more quietly, so let me explain...

When turkey hunting, I never insert a round in the chamber to start my hunt by working the action. Instead, I open the action drop a shell in, and slowly/smoothly close the action back ALL THE WAY UNTIL IT CLICKS.

By doing so, it can't be heard more than 50 yards away

You can do this with an auto as well.

True.
My side by side comparisons have shown a pump to have make less noise. This is highly unscientific, however, as I am extremely practiced with this act vs some guys I have taken with autos that were perhaps not so in tune with their equipment lol.

You can hold the bolt and gradually let it close vs. it slamming shut. It sounds cooler when you let her slam in though ;)
In all seriousness I load my guns at the truck and sling it over my back so noise isn't an issue here

I do the same, and you might be surprised...
Depending of course on how far you have to walk in

My first 25 years of hunting all I ever used was pumps. Shotguns & rifles. I love them because they are bulletproof. You can't go wrong with a good pump gun!

With that being said, 10 years ago I bought a Remington 1187 autoloader. And have been using it ever since. I just love that gun. I bird & deer hunt with it.

So in my opinion, you can't go wrong with either.

The speed difference between a semi auto and a pump is so minimal it's not even a factor for me. Maybe it would be for a world class trap/skeet shooter, but most people aren't capable of repeatedly drawing a fine bead that fast anyway.

I've always shot 870 wing masters and an express that I won at a DU banquet when I was 12. My rifle is a model 70 bolt action. If you shoot an auto enough, at some point you'll get to try and un-jam it as your prey runs/flies away. A semi auto cost my uncle the the biggest buck he's ever seen in his life. Mega Monster Colorado mulie.

Yes Autoloaders need much better maintenance. You need to keep them cleaned and oils with regularity. The only reason I haven't switched back to a pump is because I don't really bird hunt (except turkeys) anymore. And 870's are bulletproof!
