Diaphragm calls, how do you use em?

Unread postby oldrank » Fri May 13, 2016 12:36 pm

I picked my boy up a mouth call to practice with today. I have no problem using mine but I have always done it backwards. I suck in instead of blowing out. Ive had other hunting partners try em n nobody can seem to use em well. Anyone have trouble with them? Im trying to teach the boy but not sure what to tell him cause I do it backwards. Im hoping he can get it down, it makes it a little funner if he can call too. I got a few slates he can play with also if needed.

oldrank, I have never down it backwards to see how that works...and to be honest, I would start off with the basics with him.

Make sure the tape around the latex isnt too big for the roof of his mouth. Have him play around and see what sounds he can make...not really turkey sounds, just sounds. I carried mine around with me when I first started just learning how to change sounds from one noise to the next

Learning cd or dvd may help with the actual calls. The more he keeps it in his mouth and practices the more comfortable and confident he will become.

I would probably choke or inhale that sucker if I tried usein it backwards, however, I do use some upsidedown. I think they sound better IMO when I use them that way.

I learned from practice and YouTube mostly. There are hundreds of videos on how to call on a diaphragm.

Agreed. 2 reed small pallet (if necessary). First step for many is just getting the call in your mouth and getting past any gag reflex. Then work on making some sounds. YouTube can help beginners big time.

Before you know it, your son will be asking for woodhaven calls for Christmas and the friction calls will be for sale on craigslist.

Im pretty decent with a diaphragm call. I picked it up quick without much practice one of my buddies still can't use one after alot of practicing. I would have him learn a call blowing up on the reed and a call blowing out thru the reed. Put the two together in the same breath you have a yelp. The company's that make the hard plastic piece called a tone trough over the reed are easiest to use IMO. Primos and hunter specialties makes them
