Fall gobblers

Unread postby mauser06 » Mon Jun 01, 2015 7:18 am

Anyone on here have a thing for killing fall gobblers??

I can walk around with the shotgun and usually find a turkey to shoot...

I can usually peg one with the bow if I want...

But usually all I see is the flocks of hens/young of the year.

I did take a fall longbeard spot n stalk with the bow 2 falls back I think it was..

I just lucked in to seeing them...

I wanna start getting somewhat serious about killing a fall gobbler...

I know the season runs the same time as the rut thing starts...

I'd give up some bow hunting time to crush a fall longbeard...

I just dont even see them...seems like they flock up together maybe..or roll in small groups..once in a blue moon I see them with the big flocks but not always..

Any tips of finding them? Hunting them? Calls..tactics..etc...2 beards and spur sets a year just isn't enough knowing it COULD be 3 lol...

Fall gobblers are easy to kill but first you gotta find them. They have a pretty simple pattern and will follow it religiously until something messes it up. Usually I've found they'll have 1 or 2 roosting areas and hit the same food areas day in and day out. Very difficult to call, any fall gobbler I've shot have been lucky ambushes. Only turkeys I've called in the fall are from busted up groups of hens or else misplaced young ones right of the roost.

Kinda what I thought...

Do you find them typically hanging together like I usually see??

I got lucky and found 3 or 4 longbeards feeding in a field while I was walking into deer hunt...really windy and they were next to a browned out cornfield...it was making a heck of a lot of noise...perfect cover...they fed right towards me and I smoked one at 22yds with the bow..one of my proudest hunts...a spot n stalk bow killed longbeard..

I will have to do some scouting this fall and try to get on them...

Bust them up, sit down, call them back in.

Some guys don't like to hunt this way but it is by far the best way to kill fall gobblers.

You can also do mock fights to call in a group of gobblers.

They definitely flock together just like bachelor bucks in spring summer, except usually bigger groups. They tend to roost in the same few areas each fall.

What kind of call do you use when busting fall gobblers?

I never busted a flock and called them....ive always walked into the flock and picked one and shot it..

They seem to be harder to pin down..usually not gobbling on the roost..though ive heard it a few times..

And often corn is standing and they just dont seem to be as visible...

I know the kee keep run is good when busting fall flocks of hen and young of the year..dont know that's the call to get fall gobblers attention...

THe wingbone you are getting would work good for deeper gobbler yelps. I know you are not a huge fan of mouth calls but get on and practice having your top lip angled to get a deeper gobbler yelp sound. Not sure if they will come in to kee kee runs or not.

I saw a group on the last day of archery that were gobbling at each other like crazy. Couldn't bring them closer with my voice calling. Actually they flew the whole way across one mountain to the other. FAIL
NEXT YEAR I' HOLDING OUT FOR A BIG ONE!!

Without breaking them up you aren't too likely to call them at ALL...they are already in their flock..

Funny how many I see till the season opens...ive shot 2 with the bow...wiffed one I thought was farther than she was..took me a bit to learn how to setup and draw and shoot them..even from a tree my setup is a bit different...

We'll see what fall brings...I'm going to try to locate the gobbler group and if ambushes fail I will break them up and try that...
