Anyone killed a Tom with 1 1/2 in spurs?
The other thread on Turkeys vs Whitetails got me to thing about this. Are they very rare, or not that rare. Let the voting begin to find out. I personally have not.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

No inch and a halfers for me. My uncle killed one last weekend. He lives on a large farm n is the only one hunting turkeys on the block. Lots of big toms. He can pretty much pick the largest out of the flock every year. From videos ive seen there r usually a couple every year that make it to that size.

A couple. I believe 3. Lots of 1 1/4"ers. But to be fair our swamp and flatland birds down here do not wear them down much if at all.

I have not Im to tempted to shoot the first gobbler that looks big and my eyes aren't good enough to check them spurs before I shoot. I was surprised to see recorded easterns with spurs as long as 2.25 inches.

Re: Anyone killed a Tom with 1 1/2 in spurs?
I posted a yes in the poll.
I shot a 26 lb'er back in the day when the MO dept of Conservation made the registration station weigh all birds harvested and measure and record all spur lengths.
It made for a fun check in because you could check the clip board to see if your buds registered one yet (no cell phones back then) and see if it was bigger than yours!
Any ways they weighed mine at 26 lbs and spur length of 1 5/8". They would measure them both and record the longer of the two. It's beard was also recorded as 12". I probably should have mounted that one!
What I found interesting was that the tail fanned out to be bigger than any other bird I have killed since. Almost 2' bigger across than the normal adult.
I did go and look to see if I could find the spurs for a pic, but they either shrink after 20 years or the measurement without leg skin is hard to determine the base at which to consider the bottom of the spur.
I did notice that I have a lot more adult beards that I saved than I have spurs. I don't normally save the spurs unless over an inch. I also have lost a few of both as well.

Yes. Only one. Actually made a poor initial shot and ended up running him down 200 yards barefoot. I haven't seen anything close since.

Nothing that big for me. 1.25 is longest But I have a few chipped off and still over inch
I generally look at beard length but I'm not too picky.

Interesting results.
