Fanned out hens
I had a very odd turkey hunt today. The birds were very cooperative early today and we were able to kill one tom and had a close call on another one. It was a great group hunt.
Afterwards I was up on the ridge line and I saw a fanned out bird in the valley below. I was set up to reap with the bow and proceeded to stalk to the location. As I got closer, I came to realize I was stalking a fanned out hen. Stalk terminated. I've never seen a hen fan out and strut before. Has anyone seen this before? Situations when observed?
The turkey population definitely is lower in my parts this year. Perhaps she wasn't getting enough attention from the toms by calling? Perhaps a display of dominance over a rival hen near her nesting location?
Curious to hear other people's experiences.

Re: Fanned out hens
ive had it happen....had a hen come up to me and Jodi a few years ago. she came in hot to my hen decoy when she got to it she puffed up and started pecking at its head ...IF it was a bearded hen and I was a beginner hunter I would been confused and most likely would of shot it thinking it was a jake
I think its a dominance thing

I've seen them flare their feathers at my lay down hen decoy, but never full strut for 15 minutes. It was odd.

Re: Fanned out hens
I've seen it one time...was walking to my truck and was about to make a turn around a stand of pines...in the pasture I spotted a fan...no idea at the time so a get into position and setup and watch...full strut...back and forth...circles...acting like a bird in full strut...called..no gobble...no response.. Nothing...odd...after a while it came closer and I to better view...not because of calling...it showed little interest in me...but came rather naturally...
Turned out to be a hen....
WhyWhy it was strutting is beyond me...I do t know what it means...I didn't see another bird around..had good eyes on the rest of the pasture...I dont know...

This isn't my pic...Google re-paste as an example. I need to look at the footage eventually. Solo filming turkeys is hard and I know I stalked out of frame on the main cam. Need to look at POV cam. 25 yards.

This is what has me head scratching. What does it mean if you don't see another bird?
