Been out of town the past two weeks but got out tonight for my first turkey hunt/scout of the year.

Image

I bumped one turkey while walking in, watched it fly away. Walked to sit and listen to a ridge where they were roosting last yr at this time. Not much turkey sign and no gobbles heard. Think i will try a different property in the morning.

This turkey hunting sure is frustrating. Running and gunning with the bow on public land. Last night I roosted a bird in a general area. Gobble was really far off but I had an idea. Came in this morning and hoofed it the mile plus in. By sunrise no gobbles, it's overcast. I call and get a coyote howling, ok time to move. Hiking down the horse trail and what I assume was my roosted bird gobbles. Sounds a ways off to me so I cut into the woods towards him. Get to an opening under some mature pines and set my decoy and get by a tree. He gobbles but he's right on top of me. I freeze and wait forever. Meanwhile a few more birds fire up. Never heard him fly down but I assume he spotted me.

On the birds was going pretty good after he flew down but he kept getting further and further away fast and I know some other hunters are in his direction. Sure isn't an easy sport!
