Anyone having any luck hunting birds on ridges in the later seasons? The hay in the field down below is making seeing the decoys hard and it seems the toms are preferring to spend more time in the woods now. I figure being up high they can hear my calls and the vegetation isn't too bad yet so they should still see the decoys from 50-75 yards away.

if the birds are hot, you shouldn't need a decoy, so I wouldn't worry about vegetation. keep at it. eventually one may come in.

Re: ridgetop birds
There not very hot, I have not heard one gobble yet this morning. The toms are basically coming to the field and then crossing it in a few minutes or less to get to the wooded hill on the opposition side. The decoys have brought every bird in for me this season that I have had a shot at, I'm barely calling at all because they don't usually respond favorably. I last hunted Sunday and there were lots of gobbling, not sure what's changed now.

I've had a lot of luck getting into birds in the afternoon on ridges right by where they roost, they often stage there for the hour or two before fly up. Set up mid afternoon and call sparingly. Its one of my fall back tactics for call shy birds.

Do you have the option of going out into that field you spoke of and mowing a big old strut zone?

Yep! Patiences, Patiences, Patiences. The tom I killed this season came in with a hen and they never made a sound. The only calling I did was a soft purr every 15 minutes or so. Try to find a travel area on the ridge tops, find where they have been scratching around, fresh droppings and spending time.

Re: ridgetop birds
The biggest problem i have had with ridge top toms is they can see everything that occurs around them, and in the later spring they also seem to stay roosted later in the morning making it easier for them to pick me off from a half mile away.
