Tics and repellant tip.

Unread postby Stanley » Thu May 08, 2014 4:06 am

Was not sure where to post this but The turkey thread isn't a bad place. A couple of guys have asked me about tics and what I use to repel them. So I thought i would post this information up. I use a homemade blend of Permethrin. I get the stuff at Farm & Fleet. You can make about 6 quarts of spray per one quart of insecticide. I mix it up 5 parts water 1 part insecticide. Much cheaper than buying the little aerosol cans. I use empty spray bottles like Windex, Green magic.

One other thing I want to point out, you have to keep the stuff from freezing or it won't work. This goes for the aerosol cans also. I have provided two photos of my mixtures. You can see the bottle on the right was from last year and it froze over the winter. All the Permethrin settled to the bottom and if you would use this all you would be spraying would be water.

Another thing I would like to point out, Permethrin is extremely toxic to cats. So keep your cats away from your cloths until the treatment drys thoroughly. Even then I would try and isolate your cats from your treated clothes.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Great tip Stan... One other thing I would mention is that Permethrin is a toxic chemical, you should just spray it on clothing. Not skin.

Is it ok to spray the insides of your clothes with permethrin as long as it fully dries? Or do you just spray the outside?

Just the outside. You want to avoid any skin contact even when dry.

I only spray the outside. I spray my socks, undershirt, underwear, pants and outer shirt.

Good point, I should have mentioned this; do not spray it on your skin.

Permethrin is also highly toxic to cats. I'm not much of a cat person, but store in a secure location if you have feline friends.

How can you avoid contact, even if it is on the outside of your clothes?
I guess use gloves to take them off?
Or can you wash it off right away?

I wear rubber gloves when applying the solution. After drying completely it is OK to handle the dried cloths.

I just finished treating 2 socks 1 sweat shirt, 1 tee shirt, and 1 pair of pants. It took 1/2 quart. That is about $.25 as I got the insecticide on sale for $3.00. If I would have used an aerosol can it would have taken one can and I think they are about $6.00.
Won't be long and I'll have saved up enough to buy one of Dan's new books. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
