Well, this bird has given me fits this season. I had been close enough to see him 3x and hear him spitting and drumming once, but he always ditched me for real loving and not plastic artificial love. Wednesday AM I had an hour of morning to hunt at first light. I got set and the bird was hammering on the limb. After I started calling a hen wasnt going to be outdone so the battle was on. 45 mins later she won. My hand was cramping from calling so much and I desperately needed a sip of water to help my diaphram induced dry mouth. I was actually glad they flew off the limb away so I could take a rest for a second. After they got out of sight, I "ridge ran" to get on the same ridge. About 10 minutes I was set, and they headed down to some bottom fields. He gobbled the whole way, but he stopped on a bench, and started going nuts. I figured his hen gave him the slip so I moved in. I was higher than him. Yelped softly and he cut me off 125 yards away. I looked around and saw zero trees to sit on...but a beech tree the size of your wrist. Ha! Gonna make due! Sat down. Got my gun up and head down. Yelped again. Boom. 30 yards and closing fast. At 14 yards, he came around a bend and I saw his head only. Boom. Game over. 22 lbs. 10.5 inch beard. 7/8 spurs. Good 2 year old for me. Only bird I had seen or heard on this property (600 acres) in 6 hunts.
