Put one down

Unread postby Bigburner » Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:49 am

Got this guy yesterday 4/15/14. It was windy and raining so I hunted out of my ground blind. I brought a hen and Jake decoy along and put them out to see if I could get a reaction from a fired up Tom. I got set up before sunrise at a spot where I killed my bird last year and I always hit the isolated fields when it rains because they always show up at some point. I heard a gobble far off when a bird was coming off the roost at about 6:30 or so. I called and waited but after a few hours I decided to relocate. I packed up my gear and headed up the road to a different tract were I killed a bird 2 years ago and as soon as I walked in to the area I spotted a Jake and hen. I saw this as a good sign. They slipped off without too much chatter and I got situated. I set my decoys about 4 yards out and gave a little cut and yelp and that Jake fired off and came back in to investigate and I let him filter off. About ½ hour later a hen came into the plot and she fed and picked around for about 15 minutes. Then about an hour passed and another hen came in, then another and I gave a quick little yelp just to see what the reaction would be. A gobbler fired off and I called again and he was getting closer. So I figured it would be a minute or two and since the hens were there he was showing up. He popped out on a trail to my left and as soon as he saw that Jake decoy he made a dead run at it. He started chest bumping it and pecking its head. He never strutted but his head changed about 20 different colors of pissed off. So I drew back settled the pin on his heart and let him have it at 4 yards. He flipped walked about 5 yards with his wings out and his head slowly fell back and he was done. Stoked! It got exciting real quick. He’s was a monster; 26 lbs. 10” beard and some monster hooks 1 5/8”
