I have ownded both for 15 years and I would go with the 870. I shoot a lot and the 1187 is on its last leg. I agree with the above post about the tightwad choke, does wonders out of the 870 and 1187. I personally use remington #5, patterned better than the winchesters.

I have an 870, an have had the same problem as Brad. I could not get turkey loads to pattern at all. I use my whinchester for turkeys. I'd like to trade one of the shotguns in on a pistol, so I got to figure out which one to keep. I'll try the primos choke, I do shoot the whinchester supremes already.

I tried a Star dot (it was the cheapest and patterned the best) 2 different remington turkey chokes, a tru glo choke and an HS Undertaker and I think they all were about the same, big gaps with no pellets at all, even at 25 yards. After shooting my mossburg I will never go back to the 870, the only reason I keep it is because I won it fresh out of Hunter Safety back when I was in Middle School in a pheasants forever essay contest. If it were not for that it wouldn't even be in my gun case because I have tried so many things to it and had the same results over and over. With my 870 I killed 1 tom at 25 yards and have missed at least 10 at ranges anywhere from 5 yards to 35 yards. It is a horrible patterning gun, and the mossburg simply does not care what choke you use or what shell you feed it, it just kills them dead. At 40 yards I have a denser pattern with the mossburg then I did at 25 with the remington.

Ditto..

I have never tried an 11-87 (if I ever get a semi-auto, it will probaby be a Winchester or an SBE), but I do own two 870s and they have been awesome. I have a 20 gauge that I bought when I was like 10, and I used to put thousands and thousands of shells through it every year and never had an issue. My other one is a Super Mag 12 gauge that I got probably 10-12 years ago and used to shoot that a ton too.. My only gripe with it is that it's kinda heavy, but other than that, its been an awesome gun as well.

870 you can even use it as a canoe paddle if you need to. ;)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Although I have never tried that, I don't doubt it one bit..

Mine has been knocked out of the duck boat more than once and I've had to reach in at least shoulder deep to fish it back out, and it's never skipped a beat..
