My First Turkey
I've been hunting many years but never hunted Turkeys due to the fact there hasn't been any in the area I live. The farm I deer hunt in Kansas is full of them though. I made the long 16 hour drive north with the intention on killing one with my recurve. After missing a long beard and then a jake the next day I was getting frustrated. I shoot my bow well, but like you all already know I was a little shook up when they come in to the decoys strutting
My buddy was filming these misses and laughing at me. So I put him up to bat Saturday evening and two huge long beards came running in and he proceeded to miss a 10 yard shot with his recurve lol
He brought his compound and shot gun the next morning and we setup in a spot we had seen them strut the morning before. Of course they didn't come in range of the stick bow. I told him I'm tired of sitting in this blind, lets make a loop and cut them birds off. He said it would be nearly impossible to pull off with a camera and a bow, that I should take his gun. He really wanted to get a kill on film. I hadn't killed anything with a gun since 2005 but I really wanted to get my first turkey. So off we went. We setup after making a big loop in a spot we were sure they would come to. Wasn't there 15 minutes when the hen shows with the gobbler right behind her. I waited for his signal, which we never discussed lol. He said "Shoot" and I pulled the trigger. My first bird was flopping on the ground. I must say, That was one of a rush"! 24 lb's 8 1/2" beard 5/8th spurs
