Would you shoot a bearded hen?
Would you shoot a bearded hen? Why? Or, why not?
For me, I would love to shoot one once, but I would want to mount it if I did.

I think the real question is: would a tom want to mount it?
I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference and shoot any bearded bird regardless.

If it's legal, sure why not. It's not everyday you see a bearded hen.
I won't shoot it if I know there's a tom coming tho.

I would shoot the first one hands down for the mount after that it would depend how my season is going, I would like to say I would not shoot a second or third but if given the chance but its hard to say I sometimes have a pretty light trigger finger..

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?
I voted no. I would not and as I've said in other posts I've passed on several over the years.
I don't quite understand the obsession with wanting to shoot a bearded hen. Bearded hens really aren't that rare. If I recall correctly, I think somewhere around 10% of all hens have a beard.
Depending on where you hunt, if you want to shoot a bearded hen I would assess the overall population and see if it can stand taking a hen out.
I don't have a problem with someone shooting a bearded hen where legal. It's just not for me.
For those who have or would like to shoot a bearded hen, why did you do it or why would you want to? Maybe you consider it a trophy. I'm just trying to understand what the fascination is with bearded hens?

I have seen a couple over the years and didn't kill them.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?
I voted i would shoot one yes! In fact, i missed one last spring.. My fluorescent tubing on my pin was busted and didn't glow. I watched her for over a half hour scratching behind my blind 20yds where i couldn't shoot at her. When she finally walked into my window, i drew back and couldn't see my pin on her! At 15yds, shot right under her..
I saw her a few times last fall and on trail cam pictures, she easily has a 7" beard, she's easy to pick out. So hopefully this year I can get a crack at her. [s]Redemptions[/s].. Revenge!

Not legal here. I hunted a farm a few years ago and there was multiple bearded hens on it. I seen one strut once while hunting there.

Re: Would you shoot a bearded hen?
I would not hesitate to shoot one, my dad killed one back in 2003. His went 15 pounds with just under an 8 inch beard and had 12 eggs in her in various stages of development. I see no more harm in taking a bearded hen over a doe whitetail.

Maybe it is 10%, but its not easy to get a hen near your blind they don't come in as easy as tom's and most people only have one or two opportunity in there life to kill a bearded hen. I would consider it a trophy.

I was under the impression that they laid an egg every day or every other day. Then when they had 10 or more laid on a nest they sat and started to incubate them for 28 days.Brad this is news to me??????

That is definitely interesting.
And yes I would shoot one. We have a lot of turkeys around here and I wouldn't hesitate.
