Do you hold out for long beards? any legal bird? depend on weapon or day of the hunt?

I'm shooting anything with a beard until I can get that elusive first turkey under my belt.

With a shotgun I will only shoot a tom or bearded hen. I do not care how old the tom is, but no jakes with a gun. With a bow I would prefer a tom or bearded hen, but I do not know if I would pass on a jake. For sure on the last day or two with a bow I would shoot him.

I let the jakes walk, but if it came down to the end of season with no shots I wouldn't hesitate to take one. Haven't had that problem for many, many years though.

I haven't shot a jake yet. I have let them go early in the season and then gone birdless, but I'm ok with that. It's got to have a long beard for me to shoot. Nothing against shooting jakes, this is just how I choose to do it.

Tom or jake for me and that depends on how my season is going. I try to hold out for a while for a tom but I won't hesitate to shoot a jake if my season is ending fast. Since I mostly bowhunt turkeys, probably 95% of the time, shooting a jake with a bow is acceptable to me. I have no interest in shooting a bearded hen. I've passed several over the years and I passed one the other day at 5 yards.

Only thomass for me! Jakes don't do it for me anymore, shot a couple with the bow and gun, but focus on toms, and with the bow only. Sure i'll take a long bearded hen, but if she's not nesting and i know it.

Regardless of time or season, i have to let jakes pass, gotta let them get big. Even if that's all i see.
