Saturday Morning Fight!

Unread postby Mountain Man » Mon Apr 09, 2012 12:36 am

Yesterday morning I purposely drove by an area that I see a lot of turkeys just to see what might be going on. As luck would have it, they were very close to the road. There was one dominant tom with several hens and a few jakes by the road and a small group of four toms hanging back watching the stud with his harem. The four toms were strutting, spinning, and pacing back and forth and wishing they could be the guy by the road with the girls. As I approached in my car, the hens and jakes crossed the road and scurried out of sight but the big boy stayed in the cut corn field. He gobbled and paced back and forth a bit. As he did that, one of the toms in the background quickly made a wide circle through the cut corn and headed straight for the dominant tom.

The two heavyweights circled and sized up each other. This went on for several seconds. Then contact was made. They began jumping, flapping their wings, and kicking with their spurs. Then the dominant tom used his beak to grab the head of the lesser tom. Sometimes he would grab the back of the head and other times it was the front of the head. At one point he held the face of the weaker tom for about 2 minutes and would not let go. With their heads locked together they twisted and turned their necks and spun around in the cut corn. Eventually the dominant tom was successful in defending his position and chased the loser away.

The photos turned out relatively good. Some are slightly out of focus due to movement of the birds and I had to zoom in quite a bit on most of the photos and I was doing it with just a hand held camera.

Here are some photos leading up to the fight, the fight itself, and the loser being chased away.

The dominant tom is in the foreground gobbling. The challenger is strutting in the background.

In the next few photos note all of the biting by the dominant tom and how he holds onto the back of the head or the face of the lesser tom.

The fight lasted about 5 minutes and then the winner chased the loser away. This picture was really cool as it captured the iridescence of the winner’s feathers.

Super stuff. Really appreciate you sharing.

Another BEAST exclusive, thanks for sharing Mountain Man.

What was it like watching that unfold? Have you seen anything like that before?

It was very cool to watch. I haven't seen a fight that intense before in person. I was really wishing I had a video camera with me.

If anyone is hunting this week and uses decoys, you might want to try a strutter with a couple hens. Just be careful with your setup when using a strutter.
