How Many Decoys???

Unread postby AC Rider » Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:00 am

So if I'm using a jake, is it better to use one hen decoy or two?

I think it depends on the time of the spring, the amount of birds in your area, and how old the tom is. If there are very few hens I would say use a 1 to 1 ratio. I usually use 2 hens and a jake, because in my mind the tom will not like a jake with one hen, he wont tolerate a jake with two hens. I wonder how two jakes and a hen would work. My dad has had success with all different kind of combinations, he has even used a flock of 7 decoys before on multiple occasions with kills on most of them.

Never used any decoys. I hunt big timber birds so it would only scare them because they can't see them from a distance. Same goes for deer decoys.

I have always gone with two hens.. One submissive and one feeder, but this year I am ditching those two and just running one upright hen. Hopefully I will get the matching feeder to go with her for my birthday, but that won't be til after the season is pretty much over..

Used one with a jake last year, I'll have an upright hen and a feeding hen to go along with my jake this year (all DSDs)

I think one decoy is plenty. I use 3 at times but have had just as good of luck with one hen.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
