I was on my way over to meet Dave and was passing a farm some friends own and saw a tom and two hens crossing a field. I new there rought would take them past a tight spot if I could get there in time so I drove around to the other side to sneak to my set up, and guess what? Another big Tom and hens coming from the other way :o Sooo, I spun around and split the difference and parked at the farm.
I trotted to the back of the property and was disappointed to see the 1st tom had already passed and the second was on the neighbors property and I had to crawl to not get seen... I crawled into a nasty briar bush that was far from comfortable and tried my hardest to lure the big Tom and his hens over... The came in to about 40 yards, but were on the neighbors and I don't have permission to shoot onto there property. So I just kept trying to work them a little farther.
It was not looking good... The hens stopped and settled into some dusting baths, and Tommy wouldn't come over without them. I still had hope when my cell phone started vibrating. I was pretty hidden and new it would be Dave wondering where the heck I was, so I answered it and told him to head over to the farm.
Just as I hung up I looked up and a new big bird was running in fast and was already on top of me coming in from my blind side.
I aimed my tripod camera at the opening and when the bird got to 3 yards I jumped to my feet, he gave me the old bug eyed freak out freeze in motion look, then spun around hitting high gear, but he only made about 15 yards before I knocked him down...
