MI Turkey App period 1/1/12-2/1/12

Unread postby Uncle Lou » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:54 pm

Come one come all, MI has turkeys. And for you trophy hunters there are big turkeys. I was chasing a 30 pounder around on a public piece just north of me. This bird owned what looked like a 14-inch beard. Had Arrowbender all the way from MN to see if he could call it in. Nada.

Last winter on private down the road I was watching a flock of about 50-60 birds, one had a beard that went blah, that thing had a beard that was shaped like a traffic cone. Prolly only a 26 pounder though.

Anyway, see this link for the necessary info.

I will be disecting the guide during the next week or so. First major change I see is they pushed the start back a week. Also, a hunter can only get one spring turkey tag, regardless of leftovers.

In general MI has four seasons. First one starts on April 23 and will go for a week, then two more one week seasons after that. The fourth season, the late season then goes to May 31. There is a MI private land tag in all of southern MI that goes the first two weeks and generally does not sell out, meaning this is a virtual Over the counter tag (just checked 65,000 available).

There is also a statewide late season tag labeled 234. Great tag, see link for more info on this one. It is a guaranteed tag. Meaning you can just buy it up to May 1, no application fee of $4. Non-resident cost is $69, resident cost is $15.

Also, based on the last few years, the Upper Peninsula Tag M is an all season all UP tag. Anywhere in the UP that is open to turkey (and it is most or all of the UP) and the season dates are April 23-May 31.

For any non residents who want to see the UP, what a great time to see it and good opportunity to bag a bird. Southern UP around Escanaba is full of birds.

I will add more info as I go through it. Results of the MI Turkey Draw will be March 1

Excellent info, Lou... let me know if you think you'll have time to team up on a couple of birds this spring. 8-)
