A Bitter Sweet End to an Incredible Season

Unread postby Hilts » Tue Oct 04, 2011 12:46 am

The brother to one of our crew members came up with a tag this weekend. We got lucky and found a nice track saturday morning after looking for an hour or two with nothing going. It ended up being a 5-6 hour hunt with lots of miles and a mean fighting bear that would not tree. I led the guy in to the river bottom where the bear was fighting the dogs. We moved with them back and forth across the river until we were finally able to get a clear shot at about 8-10 yards.

The bear dressed out at 415lbs. This has been far and away our best season ever.

The bitter part was near the end of this hunt we lost a a good up and coming dog to this bear. Happy hunting Clancy.

Definitely sorry to hear about the dog loss that sucks. Congrats on another awesome bear! It'd be cool to see pics of all the bears you guys got this yr. No pressure if you have them handy though it'd be awesome. How many did you guys end up killing total?

Also, do you this was another bear on its way to wintering grounds or were you just hunting a different area?

Congrats again!

Losing a dog is a difficult thing to go through. Our crew has been pretty lucky, it has been 8 year since we lost a dog to a bear. We all know it's a possibility every time we let them out of the truck. The only positive spin you can put on it is the dog died doing what it loved to do. Which is what we all hope for rather than it being car, wolf, disease, or something along those lines.

I do believe this was just another bear moving through our area. From what we all seen this summer, the crew didn't have high hopes of this being a big bear year. I had only seen one really nice track all summer and only one bear that would have went over 200.

We ended up with 8 bear this year, which is more than we normally take. The picture thing may take a day or two. I could end up in the hospital at any time in the next week or so here with our baby girl being born, so I apologize if I don't get them up.

Congrats on the season and upcoming baby (is she here yet?). And sorry to hear about your dog. Good way to look at the situation though.

I cant wait to go on a dog/bear chase some day. That last one sounded awesome
