Sarah Scores
Her Father Chance called me with only 3 weeks left before the 2011 bear season was to start. I had to ask, "why did you wait so long?" like a few hunters before him, he said, the guy that was going to bait for us fell through. I told him I was all filled up for the first week but had openings for the second week. I asked, how many hunters? two he replied, he asked how much for the hunt? I could tell by his hesitation and later in his voice that money was going to be an issue. He wanted to know about the hunt details anyway, camp, success etc. Our talk was going on a 1/2 hour by now and I new he wasnt able to afford the price for both hunts and chances are he wasnt going to book, but I never could turn down a good conversation when it comes to hunting, so we continued to talk. I asked him how many years it took for him to draw the bear tag? 8 years and I tranfered it to my 12 year old daughter. Up to this time I did not know he gave his bear tag to his daughter. My heart began to soften up "children". My conversation shifted to kids with cancer and he commented that his 12 year old daughter is a cancer survivor, she had a brain tumor. Right in the middle of our talk I said whoaaaaaaaaa, wait-a-minute, your daughter, the one who has the bear tag, has or has had cancer? Yes he said, I said, Chance, the lord works in mysterious ways. What do you mean, he said, Kids with cancer get free hunts with Northern Wisconsin Outfitters, there was a very long pause before he spoke, you mean, she gets a free hunt, yes, he commented, I dont know what to say, well I said, you can tell me when you plan to arrive.
Sarah and the whole family arrived for the second week of the "baiting" bear season. They camped the whole week, the weather was miserable, it rained and was cloudy for 90% of it. Sarah had her chance at a small bear early in the hunt, by the time she decided she wanted to shoot it, it ran away. The next few days they seen nothing but raccoons. They had a wedding to attend on the weekend in Chicago but made plans to come back and try her luck on this Tuesday & Wednesday. Tuesday morning my camera man Peter and I hauled in a ladderstand and a extra tree stand to one of the bait stations that was still seeing good daytime activity. That evening nothing was seen and my Cuddback Attack trail camera showed a very large boar hit the bait at 4:35 AM. The forcast for Wednesday showed it was going to be a beautiful day with a perfect wind direction for that stand.
Let me tell you a little about Sarah, at 3 1/2 years old she had a brain tumor, she endured the full amount of Radiation & Chemotherapy that the Mayo Hospital allowed, because of the treatments she has the body of a 8 year old, she takes shots and medication everyday to maintain some what of a healthy lifestyle. She spent 7 days, around 29 hours on the bear stand and not once did she every complain, she is one tough kid, she is a survivor.
At 6:45 PM on Wednesday after watching the bear for around 10 minutes Sarah finally got her first black bear.
This is what drives me, This is what keeps me going, This is what I love to do.

That's awesome. An incredible opportunity you offer for kids. I give you a lot of credit Mike that's really generous. Got any pics of the big bear?
