Live update from the bear stand

Unread postby James » Tue Sep 06, 2011 8:54 am

Since I have good 3G service today and the hunting is slow I thought I would post a live update. It's been a very frustrating hunt so far. As indicated by my trail camera photos earlier last week I thought I had a slam dunk with a boar hitting my bait early in the evening most nights. Tuesday morning I refilled baits and swapped SD cards. Thursday morning on the opener I walked in to find both of my trail cameras stolen and my boar bait dead. I spent Friday morning talking with the warden and sherrif to file reports but I kept on hunting. Sometime Friday night my boar bait got hit again despite fresh boot tracks from the probable thieves likely looking for my stands next. Not a whole lot I can do other than stay with it. Tonight I am sitting my boar bait again but it doesn't look like it was hit since Friday night.

Here is my view tonight...

Not much happening so far. Heard what I thought might be a bear, odd vocalization and heavy steps. That was at 4:30. It's so thick in here I basically won't see a bear until it's on the pit.

Temp is about 63 and slowly dropping, no wind - could hear a needle drop

Bummer on the cameras getting boosted. Hang in there tough. You never know.

Man that sucks I hate thieves!

I hope you still get a crack at that bear. Do you have any back up baits? I hope you have success despite the set back by the crappy thieves.

I would have texted ya if I got one. Other than a grouse walking by at 7:30 it was completely quiet evening.

Nothing worse then thieves!! The hunters In our group had a tough hunt as well. 1/3 of our baits got scabbed on by 2 other bear hunters the day before the opener. One was a guide. It's so frustrating when you work your tail off all summer getting bait and then doing the tough but fun work (baiting) prior to the hunting season to have someone leeching off of your hard work. Prior to these 2 guys moving In on us these 4 baits were on fire. You could've almost guaranteed a bear would be shot off of these baits.

Best of luck James.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. My bear season is over as I have family obligations this weekend and then we start to hunt whitetails on the 17th.

Schultzy - I'm with ya. There are way too many losers in the world looking to take a shortcut. All I can say is that it comes around, I'll keep doing it the hard way.
