Congrats Chad.

Just got in from a L-O-N-G drive... Chad got a great bear. We have not weighed it, but its got to be at least 300 dressed. This was chads 1st bear hunt, his 1st day on stand, he has hunted bear for a total of 2 hours.
But I would say, the whole effort of him coming up with me picking the bait sites, planning the hunt, placing the stands based on wind and bear tendency, choosing the right bait, the right amount of bait, finding bear sign, and learning how to deal with a downed bear in the middle of the wilderness has made this one time bear hunter a more seasoned veteran than 90% of the rest of the hunters in that area...
When reviewing the trail-cam videos and pictures opening day it was a hard choice cause there were good bears, and multiples hitting all 6 of our baits hard. One of the baits we had named "Barts diner" because of me setting a bait in the same area a couple years back and having a huge bear I think could of been well over 600 pounds hitting it that we named "Bart the bear"... There was a logging road that we could get to within 1/8 to a 1/4 mile from the bait location... The area was so thick we literally had to bust a trail thru to a strip of tamarack trees where the swamp opened up a bit. The bait was slow at 1st with a very large sow with cubs protecting the bait. But after a week or two of baiting the bigger bears started showing up...
I will let chad tell his own account of his hunt and kill...
The way I bear hunt is very different than the way I deer hunt... You can't "Lone wolf it" with bears... I like to have about a 3 or four man camp. Its very difficult getting the bears out in time without spoilage, and the distance these baits are in, makes the job almost impossible for one lone hunter, and very difficult for two...
We make a hammock out of a tarp and two cut poles to carry the bears out. Chads bear was so heavy dressed that the two of us could only get about 20 feet before having to set it down. Combine that with this being a slashing that is so thick with 15 foot trees that your stumbling and trying to bend the poles down trails... I think my arms are 6 inches longer today! Doing all that in the dark with the potential to get lost while carrying a bear... Better know and trust your compass!
I am real glad I did not shoot a bear on the same night!

Congrats Chad! and way to keep cool and get great footage! 8-)
