wolves on the bear baits...

Unread postby dan » Mon Aug 22, 2011 11:40 am

A few years ago I had my baits completly taken over by wolves in Northern Minnesota. It seemed to me when a pack of wolves took over the bears shut down... Those baits however were started by someone else and when I started my own baiting in Minnesota I went down into the cool swamps and stopped seeing wolves.
But this year there back... Several of the baits were hit by wolves. Anybody have any issues with wolves running the bear off? I know schultzy baits with meat, he must of had a run in or two over the years...

We usually get a picture or 2 from a timberwolve on a couple of the same baits every year. Honestly I don't care for having wolves around. I've heard people say wolves won't bother a bear but I think they make bear nervous and kind of skittish like. I recall one bait back In 2003 I think It was before we started using camera's. The front pad on this bear was 6.5 Inches, he had to be a monster of a bear! He started hitting our bait a week Into the bear season and I told dad to sit It being I already had a big bear that I shot back In 2000. 2 to 3 days later the wind direction was finally good so he sat It. He didn't see nothing that sit but the next day In to bait It we saw a timberwolve track which was also a big track. That was the last time this bait ever got hit. Was the wolve the culprit? I think It was. We've also shot bear on baits that we've had wolve pics on. Never though have we gotten a picture of a wolve hitting the bait. Their always standing off to the side or In back of the bait a ways Investigating. Their skittish animals too.

A few years before this my dad was hunting a different area by himself and had gut shot a sow. He knew exactly where he hit It so he let It go till morning. The next morning while on the blood trail he found digging marks every where. You could see where wolves showed up and were fighting with this bear. He tracked her for a mile he figured. Never to be found.

Actually had the same thing happen a few years ago when I drew my wisconsin tag. Had 2 baits the wolves took over, 1 had a nice bear hitting it. Once the wolves got in there, no more bear. The guy that started the baits for me and lives up there said he's seen it plenty of times, the bear just dont seem to tolerate the wolves, so they move on.

Not being a bear hunter really don't have any experience with bear baiting.

But deer hunting up in that area, weve had our share of run ins with wolves in deer season and have lost a couple of bucks to wolf packs. If we put a buck on the ground in the evening when were to far back to get them out that night. We will cover the carcass with a tee shirt, they don't like the human scent, they'll walk circles around it but won't feed. Don't know if that would work on a bait site or how it would affect bears?

A lot of our baits have had wolf tracks on them but only a couple of them get checked regularly by the wolves. Hasn't seem to bother the bear that I am aware of.

Ok, I know absolutely nothing about baiting bear, but I was wondering, why do you guys stack all the logs around a bait pile ?
