New guy. Bear size?
Hi guys I have been following this site for a while. I’ve gotten a lot of information from here. Love the Vlog by Fleelance. Thank you very much for the vids. So much good info.
My first bear 6 years ago was “easy.” 1 1/2yr old male was hitting every other night between 6:30 and 7:00. Opening day he showed at 6:45. Made a poor bow shot and spined him but it did the job.
Second tag was tougher (pulled a left over). Had good bears hitting then 2 days before season baits went dead. Opened another bait a week into season and shot a 2 1/2yr old dry sow on my second sit.
Got my 3rd tag this year after 6 years applying. Had hot bait right after starting baiting. Then only sows with 2 cubs each on each of the 3 baits.
Last Friday after reading a bunch of online reviews/fourms I bought some Gold Rush scent. Rebaited/greased my baits. Since last Friday I had 9 new bears show up. Including 5 shooters. Had 2 big bears on one bait. Hunted them couple nights but never showed and then quit showing during daylight.
Went yesterday to abandon 1 bait that had only had sow and cubs But good boar showed up in daylight couple days in row.
Well tonight I put a arrow in him at 6:40 on my first sit. Now before I revival the weight lets see how close the guys that know bears way better than me can get? Cause I know I can’t begin to guess size yet.
Sorry for the long story but just sitting here PUMPED UP and having a few celebratory Hamms. Had to share. Thanks again.

You looking for a live weight?
I'll take a stab at it - 280-300.

I say 310. Nice head good frame. There isn’t a huge sway to the belly but that is a fabulous mature bear. Congratulations. That’s a brute.

Weighed him on the scale at the feed mill. Scale read 300lbs. even dressed. But the scale rounds the weight. So actual dressed weight is between 290-310lbs.

Add 17% for live weight. So it was about 350 live. Heck of a bear.

I'm always late to these guessing games. I was going to guess 350 dressed. Congrats on a great bear and thanks for sharing. Dang I haven't had a Hamm's in years, I might grab one soon (no not right now, I am drinking coffee still, later) to salute your bear.

I tend to underestimate them from trail cam photos. I guess that's better than being disappointed when they are on the ground.

Bears are just hard period. I have a harder time judging size from others photos. Since I haven't personally stood in the spot. I have no sense of proportion from the trees, etc. Pics with barrels help alot though. Alot of pics of those extra fat fluffy ones have fooled me. I know they're not giants, but are often way smaller than I thought. Especially if you can't see the space between the ears.
