I dont think many bear hunters realize the importance of scent.....its just as important as the bait!

Was a good week baiting, bugs were still bad but the weather wasn't as hot, didn't have as many ticks on me as last week. The breeding season is winding down. In the videos I'm baiting this particular bait station then later in the evening a very respectable boar is courting this young Sow, in the second video you get a better look at how big this bear really is and his patients are being tested.

This bear is a very old Sow, her nickname is "Patch" for obvious reasons, she has not had cubs for 4 years now so I assume she is past her prime, she has a huge range, have captured her on camera 5 miles away. She looks skinny this year compared to past years. Very smart mature bear, great to see her again :o

Last week one of the baits I placed was in a new area, never been in this certain area before. After circling the area making sure no one else was in there I scouted and placed a bait station, I new it would be hit right away, fresh tracks in a creek bed etc. It only took around 8 hours for a bear to find the bait station, video shows the bear is some what cautious checking things out, making sure its safe. Took roughly 2 minutes for the bear to open up the bait. This week when I check my camera and rebait it, it will be interesting to see how many other bears are coming in.

Thanks for posting Mike. It’s great to read how you can break down and understand the bears’ behavior. I’m learning a lot just by reading this thread!

One of my favorite big bear videos so far. Love how he emerges from the foliage, listen to the Lip smacking. Wonder how long they will stay around and if he will be a regular during the season. I have 50% of the work done, its the other 50% that's the hardest part (killing the bear).

Sorry for not posting in awhile...I am really ready to get this ball game started. I know its late in the game but I did find & scout new areas that I liked so much I placed more baits, will see what shows up on the cameras. Robert Haas of Northern Wisconsin Outfitters has been busting his but every single day baiting, some big bear pictures he shares with me are awesome.

Its been really hot up here which hasn't even slowed down the bear activity at all but I hope we will get some relief by the time the season comes around. Most of the berry crop is all dried up, there are some black berries still holding, I have noticed some acorns are dropping but they are real spotty. Baiting activity has picked up, have not had any confrontations with other baiters, plenty of room up here. Hounds men have been running early in the cooler morning weather and pulling dogs by noon, last week weather was in the 90s they didn't even run.

The QuietKat bike is and has been working great...was chased by a Hen Turkey the other week, she had a late hatch, so small don't know if they will make it threw the winter. I did walk up on a few bears at the bait stations, cool watching them eye ball me then run, they must be getting used to me! Pictures below, look at the time and date, I watched this bear run away. The log is blocking the size of this bear but she is a Sow over 300lbs, shes camps out near by and is there shortly each time after I bait and leave. There is 7 different bears hitting this bait site, some nice boars too!

Some strong advice :naughty: ,never shoot at a bear laying down, even with a rifle! Those bears are there to eat, have patience, but be ready, wait for that bear to stand up and turn broadside. I understand its part of hunting but there's nothing more frustrating than tracking a wounded animal. You owe it to each animal the respect of a clean kill.

More advice....one of the biggest mistakes bear hunters make while placing a bear bait is NOT directing a bear in a right position for the shot. In the video below, you see those two logs and the hollow stump in the middle, those two logs will be and should be placed parallel to your stand set up each time you bait, it will make that bear approach the bait and turn broadside for a shot. If you cover your bait with logs never place the logs vertical to your stand set up, a bear will most likely walk in, open up the bait with its but or head facing you and lay down, before you know it he gets up and Is gone without offering you a shot. You don't have to erect a huge elaborate crib either to force that bear into the right position, just a few decent size logs will do....they like to lay down when feeding but they like a nice flat surface and will most likely not lay over any sticks or logs to do so.
