West VIrginia Bear Hunting

Unread postby Killtree » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:13 am

I went to Canada once and shot a bear over bait.
I have friends in Mill Creek WV that I can go chase bears with dogs all I want and have killed bears that way as well.
There are 4 counties in WV that has an early season the first week of Sept.
Logan, Wyoming, Mingo, and McDowell counties.
I am thinking about heading to one of those 4 counties this fall for a DIY bear hunt and some camping.
Mainly camping while the weather is nice with the possibility of getting in some bear hunting.
Anyone on here know the area that can point me in the direction of free or cheap camping?

Wrong end of the state from me, lots of bears down that way. Maybe give the CO in one of those counties a call for info?

Wrong end of the state for me too. There are some big WMA's down there, but not sure if they allow camping. I would call DNR and ask about camping. Plenty of bears, and some of the roughest terrain in the state...

District 4 - Beckley, WV 25801
2006 Robert C. Byrd Drive (304) 256-6947

District 5 – Alum Creek, WV 25003
Forks of Coal State Natural Area
50 Rocky Branch Road (304) 756-1023

Plenty of free camping in the Eastern National Forest counties, and plenty of bears, and an early September season. I can point you in the right direction if you are interested in that.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

I am really hoping for the first week of Sept and those are the only 4 counties that offer it.
