2017 Ursus Americanus

Unread postby Edcyclopedia » Fri Aug 18, 2017 3:47 am

2017 Bear Season

Who: Yours truly, Jake (my 11 year old Boy) & Dave (NH only allows 3 people on the permit to hunt over bait)
What: Ursus Americanus
Why: Turned a ½ Century old
When: Sept 1st
Where: West Central NH
How: Ruger Super Red Hawk .44 Mag S.S. 9.5” Barrel

After pulling a camera in the spring, which was out from Oct 24, 2016, it was nice to see decent activity, there were approximately 300 pics.

The pics ranged from a 1 year old Cub & Sow, a Bobcat (1st ever), a Dog, a Doe, a 5 pointer (1 ½) & an 8-pointer (2 ½).
The Bears came around quite a bit and have had good luck with arrowing one in 1995 about 100 yards away, plus a few other sighting as well.

The Baiting season opens on the day the season starts, which kind of sucks, but thems the rules, and it only lasts until September, 21st in the WMU I am hunting.
So there is not much of a chance to lure Bear in from miles away without smelly treats, so my recon is limited.
Another tidbit of information came from the state of NH fish & Game web page, it shows a strong bear population and high success rates last year…
Also, excitingly, the land owner has mentioned that he has seen more than usual Bear sightings since spring – hopefully his statement bodes well!

While Jake and I have had a double stand in for a year now, I also placed 2-trail cameras to see what might have happened since spring.
So our plan is - Jake and I will head out and prepare and bait mid-morning (Sept 1st), while collecting the SD cards and run back to camp to review.
We will scout for deer in another location, then wash-up and head back up the hill an hour before dark.

The bait I’m using is a non-chocolate mix of granola. I’ve also been collecting fry oil and will be picking up meat scraps, pastries, breads and adding a stink bucket.
In NH you are only allowed 2-bait sites, although, there is an unlimited amount (weight or gallons) of bait product a person can use.
Being my 1st year and lack of time, I chose only 1-bait location, but have ideas for the years to come…
