Bear baiting near railroad tracks

Unread postby nor' easter » Mon Jun 12, 2017 11:18 am

Has anyone tried baiting near railroad tracks? Or possibly a loud, busy road or highway? I'm looking to bait this fall on 2 new pieces of private. I have seen bears in both locations in the summer months before. The only opportunities I have are both near railroad tracks. I don't want to invest the time to prep and maintain sites if bears will be scared out of the area for a day or two everytime a train rolls through. I'll post pics of both locations in a few minutes.
Thanks

Here's the first site. Red dot is planned bait location, blue dot is stand. Green path is low traffic dirt camp road. Grey line is rr tracks. Typical winds are NW & S

Here's the second site. Red dot is planned bait, blue dot planned stand. Green path is atv access, grey line is rr tracks. The bait would be on the outside edge of a low, thick cedar swamp perfect for bear bedding Further south is an oak ridge. Typical winds again are NW & S

Both sites have potential good bear bedding opportunity very close by. My only hang up is the train. There are road crossings near both sites so the trains will be blowing their horn within a quater mile. Both sites would be within 100 yards of the tracks. Any advice is much appreciated

That pic looks like a place I baited here in northern Michigan last year and I had daylight activity

Was it also next to active railroad tracks?

I never have, but I see big water. I wouldn't expect those wind directions at that location.

If you have seen bear there before I wouldnt hesitate to place a bait station there. Those resident bears are used to the surrounding sounds and activities in that area. If you have concerns, there is plenty of time before the season starts to place some trial baits and see what's happens but I do not suspect you will have any issues. Keep us updated

We have seen older bears use noise from trucks to enter bait sites

Without question. I use roads as blockers all the time. The bears are not bothered by regular traffic. One of my best baits is literally 30 yards from a gravel road. If you knew where to look you probably could see the guy in the tree.
