Bear spottings in Southern Wisconsin

Unread postby Buck snort » Fri Jul 08, 2016 2:36 am

I've been hearing about alot of bear spotting in Southern Wisconsin in the past few weeks. I'm not a bear hunter, but perhaps you guys can enlighten me, is there a reason why they would be more active lately? I heard someone say that the young males recently have been kicked away, and are out searching for a new area-home.

Pretty normal this time of year as the younger males search for mates or new territory. I was just told of one sighted just east of Fond du Lac recently on 7 Hills Road.

Here is a pic that was sent to me. Almost looks like a year old cub to me. Can't verify if the pic is real or not but heard about it from numerous people in the area.

Most that venture to populated areas end up getting trapped and relocated. Unfortunately some are even shot and killed if they pose a danger in these areas.

No doubt they are moving south. Wouldn't doubt there are a few living in larger swamps or marshes down here.

We occasionally get them drifting down into southern Michigan too.. Usually the same scenario..younger males relocating.

A bear was just recently road killed in NE Iowa, sounds like the DNR is going to mount it for a new DNR driftless center.

We had one in the city of Beloit about a month ago.
It was darted and relocated.
Made me wonder how far they could relocate a drugged bear?
I would think not very far.
It was sited in northern Illinois the day before that.

Of coarse as the population grows the younger bears will seek out there own territory, some will adapt and some will make there way back to a more solitude environment. When people aren't used to seeing a bear in areas where they normally aren't they freak out. Its unfortunate but some of these bears get shot because of the Ohhhh no grab your kids, every one run and hide, the bear is going to kill and eat us attitude :o .

There have been 4 sightings in NE IA this year. Not sure if they're all the same young male. Sure would be cool to see some move into the state.
