So i was talking to a buddy of mine and telln him about my up coming bear hunt and he told me when he goes he digs a "bunker" type hole in the ground to hunt out of. He says late in the evening our scent goes down thus hunting out of a hole helps him. Any thoughts?

Might be fun till the bear decides it's time to hibernate.

Re: Bear blind
We shoot a few bears from the ground. I have killed two just sitting up against a big spruce tree like you would hunting turkey.
We like to sit uphill and make a stick frame against a pine tree and then frame in with pine boughs. It's works great for gun hunters as we can sit farther back. We did have a longbow hunter shoot a bear last year 5 yards from the bait sitting on a stool

Re: Bear blind
My buddies reasoning is its better for his scent sittting in a hole rather than a tree because as thermals fall in the evening so sitting in a hole helps w scent? Does he have a point?

I don't think it works that way... Scent kind of comes off you in the air currents and will be outside of the hole as well as in it. I prefer a tree cause big old bears often circle and come in on edge. They smell you once and they either don't come back, or come back after dark only... There are some bears though, that probably smell you and come in any way. Or don't circle.

Re: Bear blind
ARE WE TALKING WISCONSIN HERE? If yes, what a rush it would be to be able to shoot a bear from the ground....But I don't think it makes a difference for scent control. I think you stand a better chance above ground when hunting those big educated mature bears. Hunting on the ground those bears would pick you out quicker visually VS in a tree stand thus getting there unwanted curiosity and attention. You most likely wont get away with it with a trophy bear.

Re: Bear blind
Thanx guys i really value all your opinions. Maybe ill just stick to the tree. I want a big bear. It would be a rush from the ground but if my odds are better at a trophy from the tree thats where i will be!!!
