Michigan Black Bear Hunt.

Unread postby Mibowfreak » Thu Mar 10, 2016 10:03 am

Hey guys. I will not be going out of state to chase whitetails this year, so I am really thinking about getting my black bear tag here in Michigan. With other whitetail trips in the future planned, I am really starting to research this. I am sitting on a pile of preference points and have been thinking that this year would be a great time to go.

Just looking to see who all has hunted black bears here in Michigan.

What were your experiences?

Would also love to hear some stories.

If your sitting on a pile of points I am guessing north of 5. What part of Michigan are you in.

I have hunted bear in Mi 2x. I am fortunate enough to be 2 for 2. First bear was near higgins lake (Red Oak) in 2007, great hunt. Second hunt was in the UP Stonington Peninsula. Another great hunt and time. First bear was an average Mi bear 150 male, the second was slightly smaller. Both were unbelievable table fare.

I got involved with the baiting on both, had help as they were some distance for me, especially the UP. I loved both experiences and you should go.

What area(s) are you thinking of?

Thanks for the input Lou.

I live in south central Michigan. More towards the central part.

I have always been interested in the Baraga Unit and the Red Oak unit. I have no ties in the U.P. but do have a cabin just off of Higgins Lake.

Also, I am sitting on 8 points.

I've heard good things about Lac labelle lodge in the UP. They're average weight bear is 50lbs heavier than the state average. I knew some people that went there every chance they got. They sell out their hunts the first day after the drawing

I have a buddy that runs bear with hounds in the UP around Trout Lake. His group takes some bears. I was fortunate to shoot one with him. Wasn't a real big one, but it was cool to get bear. I don't think I would shoot another one with hounds. I definitely would like to take one with my bow.

Dont waste those points on baraga unit, do something like Newberry that needs 6 or red oak that needs 6. Are you thinking of do it yourself or a guide?

Nice bear Joe, I would love to chase with dogs

I just checked and I was wrong, I was going from memory,

Here are the preference points that were needed based on 2014, as listed in the 2015 guide which was the last one. Baraga needed at least 5, I didnt think it was that high.

I am 50/50 weather or not to use a semi guide or diy. I am a diy type of guy, but dont know a ton about bears. I have waited many years to be able to go, so I want to make the best adventure I can out of it. Also, I want to hunt them with a bow. So I know I will be hunting over some type of bait. If I decide on a U. P. unit, itvwould be tuff for me to get up there and keep up on the bait sites.

Just checked that lodge out. Man, they sure do shoot some good bears. But, it does say they are no longer doing bear hunts there. Wonder why?

Just saw that. Not sure what happened. I know that area produces the biggest bears and alot of their hunts were on public land. There's other outfitters in that area.
