I purchased the preference point a while back....do any of the Michigan guys know if I need to buy my base license before the drawing? Was just looking at the black bear digest and one of the requirements was that you have to be eligible to purchase a bear license before the drawing on June 29...so I'm wondering if being eligible means having your base license purchased for the year.....

Re: Michigan bear preference point question
No you don't need a base license before any drawing. You need a base license before buying a bear, deer, elk, turkey, etc., so you just buy it when you go to get your first hunting license of the season.
The base is a replacement to the old small game and now a prerequisite of any big game license.
Also, if you turkey hunted this spring you already have it.

Thanks Lou. The "eligible" thing kind of got me thinking because they didn't explain what eligible meant. I didn't turkey hunt so I havnt purchased my base for this year. Just wanted to make sure I would get my point without having my base purchased already.

Re: Michigan bear preference point question
I guess I just ignore the eligible part, assuming that I am. I think that means that you are legally able, of the right age, and have the dnr sports card and such. But now you got me thinking and I think I might dig a little further into what "eligible" means exactly.
I keep these books around multiple places for reference, the 2014 bear is on my desk turns out.
to be eligible to apply meant in 2014.
1) Be eligible to purchase a bear hunting license for the current season
2) Be 10 year or older during the hunt period for which you are applying
3) Be hunter safety-certified or an apprentice hunter
4) have one of the forms of customer id, sports card (this is for non-residents), drivers lic., Michigan id

I pretty much ignored it too and then got to thinking about it when it was too late to call the dnr office and ask what "eligible" meant....
