When that big buck walks towards you this fall, concentrate on your breathing and get your eyes off his antlers.

Re: 2015 Pics & Questions
I use a large variety of baits. From popcorn, cookie dough, beef fat, beaver tails, granola. About 4-5 days before hunting starts. We start using trail mix and some beef fat depending on weather. And wolf sign. I would agree trail mix is the best. I usually buy around 4k pounds. We also use Nothwoods Bear Products scents. We also run a variety of gummies, pie fillings, peanut butter etc.

Re: 2015 Pics & Questions
Freelance night. Checked a couple bear baits while turkey, asparagus, mushroom hunting. Both hit and clean. Unfortunately I only got pics from one camera due to a bad SD card. No size on the working camera but plenty of daylight bear activity. This guy has is laying a lot of scent trails while he looks for hot females.

What's the best time of day to hunt for bears? Morning? Afternoon? All day?

My cameras suggest evening...but the camera on the individual bait site should dictate prime time.

First time bear hunting (Zone C)
Only have one bait out right now. One average/small adult visiting every several days.
Still too busy chasing sows.
He stuck around for about a half of an hour last week.

Re: 2015 Pics & Questions
Ran baits until dark tonight. Backwoods roads headed to public land are a mess with all the rain. Good tires and 4 wheel drive was a must. Mosquitos are out of control in the swamps. It was a test of stamina carrying heavy load of bait through the smamp with no hands to swat the skeeters. Lost about 5 lbs of peanut butter when I took a tumble in a mud hole.
Bear activity is high right now. I personally like to have 3-4 active baits going into a season covering different wind directions. Right now I have two good baits covering two different sets of wind (N/E. S/W). I've dropped/stopped baiting two others due to lack of consistent activity. For that reason, I set up a fresh one tonight in a new area with the predominant wind direction blowing over a large woodlot with swamp mixed in.
My preliminary trail camera surveys indicate a healthy population around my two good bear sites. I'd estimate it at 24-30 bears with the standard deviation due to the large number of young males this time of year with the same looking body. Nearly half of the population is sows and cubs. No mega giants yet, but couple 300 lbs+ shooters. It is still early. I can't wait for the next pull.
Good luck to all those running baits.

Re: 2015 Pics & Questions
The land owner requested we stay off the property where Bus 15 hangs out until June 1st because family are turkey hunting it. Will place baits next week, if he's still around we will get him on camera.

Re: 2015 Pics & Questions
Replenished a couple baits this afternoon after a morning of hinge cutting on another property. Cameras indicate that competition for the bait is picking up. The bigger males are camping right next to a baits and keeping others away. Camera pull wasn't very exciting. 100s of pictures of the same bears sleeping next to the bait.
At this point, I'm hoping a real good bear takes over one of my baits.
