Bear bed?

Unread postby croz2173 » Mon Sep 22, 2014 3:41 am

I've never come across something like this before but I seem to have found a spot that a bear is using to "bed down" on a fairly regular basis. The spot is a depression in the ground overlooking a creek bottom. It looks a lot like a well used deer bed, couldn't find any hair but found six large piles of bear scat of varying freshness adjacent to the "bed". What do you guys think? Has anyone run into this before?

Cool find for sure. It looks like it could be, I wonder what he would be feeding on in that area. Where about did you find it?

This is in NW PA big woods. The oaks are just starting to really drop and I believe that's what he is on. Mostly chestnut or "rock" oak, with some white and red mixed in.

What surprises me is how out in the open it is. I would have assumed a bear would prefer heavier cover, but then again maybe it is similar to a "night bed" for a deer.

I've found allot of these when they find food. Most of the beds I've found have been by berry patches they have hit.

I've also found beds in long grass on edges of low lying areas. Great find I'd say!!
