Many times in far northern WI and UP of MI I have found pine trees with the tops snapped off. Usually these trees are in the 6-8 foot range. Are these made by bear marking territory?

I have found enough of these that there has to be a connection so my first thought was bear since they are almost always located near swamps. They are all large enough that a person would not easily be able to snap them off like that.

What kind of tree is that Jim?

Dewey,

Last year I saw a small pine (spruce) with the top snapped off during our 1st week of baiting. I looked closely at the tree and it was claw marks on the tree. I was thinking maybe there is something they may eat that's on the top of these young pine trees.

According to this, the bears are after pine nuts. thats pretty cool Dewey.

Norway Pine. They go for the sap. Any of the old telephone poles left around here have
Chicken wire around them the bears would chew them like beavers to get the salt and minerals out.
