2010 Bear hunt
I wasn't sure If my text made It through to you Todd, cell phone service sucked with all the crappy weather we had.
I was hoping to add my name to the "bear list" but It's not happening this year as I'm done bear hunting for the year. I only had 4 days to bear hunt this year, lots of other stuff going on with my milk hauling business and I've also got a Colorado hunt planned for September 14th through the 26th or so. Like Magicman's (Todd) thread said we do have one bear down. He dressed out at 190lbs. The guy who shot It had 3 broken ribs. Back 2 weeks ago he broke 3 ribs falling In a hole. He couldn't do much baiting after that but he was there with us doing all he could. What a great ending for a guy who wasn't sure he was even going to be able to draw his recurve back and bear hunt this year after his accident. We told him earlier to get a rifle and he said no way, ain't happening!!
The baits were definitely different this year from the previous 5 to 6 years. The last 6 years or so come opening day allot of our baits had already turned 100% nocturnal but this year was different. Every evening hunt but one someone could've been shooting bear If they would've been siting on the right bait. The bait I picked to hunt I skipped opening evening because of a bad wind. I then sat there 2 sits In a row and nothing showed. The bait never even got hit at night. There was lots of shooting with In 2 miles of me so I said the heck with It and jumped ship to another bait. Guess what happened, he shows up at 8:10 that evening with me not there. When a persons only got a few days to hunt you have to get aggressive with your hunting so that's why I moved. That's hunting for ya I guess.
There was one other bait where we had 3 different bear coming In. 2 of these 3 bear were coming In before dark but the wind direction was bad so I didn't try hunting It. It was tough saying no to hunting this bait but all I would've done was make It another night hitting bait for one of the other guys In the group after I would've left. One of these bear hitting the bait was awesome!! Easily a P&Y bear, I'm thinking some where In that 19" skull range and probably dressing out right around 300 pounds.
All In all It could've been a very successful hunt If we would've been on the right baits. Weather sucked for the most part but not much a person can do that's for sure. My dad did pass up a little one opening night and my brother saw one yesterday evening to his north that ended up winding him and not coming In. He's heading back today sometime but will be going back up there In a couple of weeks. I like are chances of going 3 for 4 this year. One other thing, the different bait we used this year I think was a huge plus!
This picture's didn't turn out very well but this one here turned out alright and was about the best one In the 20 or so I took. It was raining and windy when I took these pics. My camera didn't work for some reason where the bear died but worked after we got It back to camp. That's where I took this pic. The little guy In this picture Is my nephew Beau with his dad (my brother) Jason. It was Beau's 1st time ever seeing a bear In the wild, he's almost 3 years old. The guy In camo Is Larry who's been a long time friend of the family and great hunting buddy!! He's the wounded hunter who got this bear. The bear dressed out at 190lbs. He's full of fat too. The bear are In very good shape this year In northern Minnesota.
