My first ever bait hit

Unread postby john1984 » Thu Jun 05, 2014 11:05 pm

I've just started baiting for bears for the first time ever.. I choose this spot because it's a short drive from my work. I been battling coons , but last Saturday I covered up my bait alittle better. Yesterday I walked to my bait and the logs were moved big time. I instantly got a natural high. I checked my cam and sure enough, there is a bear out here. I can't tell if it's a sow or boar. It looks well under 200 pounds to me. But I'm not sure. I was super happy to get my first pics from my own trail cam. You can see in the background an old wooden ladder stand, that's not mine, and it looks like it's been abandoned for 20 years or so. This pic was taken in Monroe County WI. How much u think this bear weighs? Is it male or a girl? I hope it sticks around cuz I think it's a legal bear. ImageImageImage

That's a really good bear. Looks like a boar to me with that long stretched out body. Sows are usually shorter between the front and back legs. I think its well over 200#.

Very nice bear for sure! It's already a reward for you to get such kind of bear in your very 1st bait site!!!
I think he could be around 300lb (pure speculation from me)...

Hey John, That's a very nice bear, well, well over 200lbs. It gets in your blood. Remember there are not to many baits out there just yet so you will have some good action on yours early, then it might slow down. The nice thing about early baits is every bear in the surrounding area and some times for miles, they will remember that it is there and who knows what bear will show up when you are hunting. Keep up the good work.

That is a really good bear. He may or may not stick around as natural food changes through out the season but nice to see daylight pictures.

Note what wind direction was that day?

My guess he will dress 300lbs maybe more maybe less. But a shooter for sure.

Looked at pictures again. See oak trees with acorns could keep him around.

Area doesn't look super thick. May thin out by late fall.

Looks like a good one. My first bear was much smaller so for me that one would be a shooter for sure.

Are you looking to kill only a big bear or just any average bear?

There is a lot of red oaks out there. Some spots are thicker than others. Here is a bad picture of leaves off. Red dot is the bait. I'm in alittle patch of pines ImageImage

Wunderground.com said it was a west wind that day. It's super easy to get to the bait site. But this area has some sedamental value to me. And I don't think this particular little area gets much bear hunting pressure at all, but I could be wrong.

I'm just hoping too see a bear while on stand. That would make my heart beat heavy. But any legal bear would be icing on the cake for me.

He will be way over 200 by September. I bet 250 gutted for sure. He is a boar and he is running . His home town coul dbe 20 mi. away. Other bears will smell all the activity and they will come. If some dope doesn't stink up the place on opening day you should be able to see some bear. SHould be no problem at all.
