Michigan Black Bear 2014

Unread postby Tom's Hunting Lodge » Sat May 10, 2014 2:13 pm

Who's putting in and what Unit if you don't mind sharing ? I have banked pref. points for the last 10 years and actually put in to draw today. I'm wanting the Baldwin Unit and I know my chances are still slim.

I have been saying all winter that I think I want to put in. This is the month to make up my mind.

With 5 points I could try Newberry Unit, which is where I have a base camp, but Amasa, and Gwinn aren't far away and I may have a better chance. I need to get the new book and see, I am basing on last years book on preference to draw.

Red Oak, which is northern lower peninsula, reduced number of permits again. That is where I hunted the last time I went.

Baldwin is a tough draw, but 10 points is a lot

 Not even a week after I put in for the Baldwin Unit, I find out from a Co-worker that he has a buddy with active bear on his private property near Mio/Red Oak Unit.

Would of drawn a tag for this Unit for sure. I have a shoe in for next year but its gonna be a long wait :violin: .

Uncle Lou, keep me posted on what you hear or end up with and good luck !!

I've got 6 points. I apply for Red Oak. I liked it when I used to be able to draw a tag with 5 points.

I just got the 2014 book. And these preference points and chances to draw are based on last year
7 points for first season Newberry (eastern UP)
3 points for second season Newberry

6 points for Red Oak

12 points for Baldwin

Points equal years of preference as most would expect

some of our areas have one season and the ones in the UP have 3 seasons. They stagger the season openings up there. Sept 10, 15, 25.

Still not sure what I am doing. Thinking about putting in for Newberry 1st and 2nd season and see what happens. I have never hunted bear up there. So why wouldn't I start?

Preference point for this year makes five. Would like to chase some with dogs one of these years.

I just got back from a run to the UP and over to Minnesota to visit some family. While I was in the UP I ran into a friend in the Gwinn Unit (just next to Newberry). He wanted to hunt bear this fall and invited me. I immediately put in for Gwinn the following morning.

I am pumped, I am going to need help all the way up there.

Gwinn needed 4 points last year, so hopefully my 5 points gets the tag. Second choice I put in for 2nd season Newberry, which needed 3 points last year.
