Bear Size

Unread postby Mike Foss » Tue Feb 04, 2014 2:23 am

There are many misconception's on the size of the average bear here in Wisconsin. With out researching this question and just be honest. What do you think  the average size of a Black Bear is here in Wisconsin?

I'd guess around the 150 pound range also.
They might come out of hibernation this spring lighter than normal with as cold as it's been?
How much snow do you have on the ground Mike?

I assume you mean average size killed in Wisconsin?

I thought I read somewhere it was 130-140 dressed.

My 2002 WI bear was 198.

2012 WI bear was 168. Just received in the mail from the dnr the bears tooth was aged at 6 years old the winter before I shot it..... So it was approximately 6.5 when I shot it in the fall.

I would say the average bear killed in WI is around 140 lbs dressed. We all see pics of 300+ lb'ers and think they are common but these big bears are like a B&C buck. Much rarer than you think.

If my memory serves me correct, Mike Foss of NWO said the averge weight is around 110-120 pounds. Hopefully he will chime in. I think it is because most hunters shoot the first bear they see. These are usually the young ones who have just gotten out on thier own, or the easist to get to come to the bait. This is just speculation on my part.

Man I would think they would be much bigger out there? NJ only just started hunting them again a few years ago. But the state record was taken on one of my public spots well over 700#. I see them in the 300#+ range every year. I wish they would let us bow hunt them....

Ya, most hunters shoot them up here in Northern WI in the 300#+ range until someone lets the air out of them, then there only 125lbs :o

Mike,

I assume you weigh all your clients bear they kill.

I think a great thread would be to post trail camera photos of the bear and have guys guess the weight. You probably have tons of examples.

The bears shot at my camp are never gutted in the woods (only under certain circumstances we will), we bring them back to camp whole. We weigh ever bear, live weight and dressed, take tooth and did rib samples when the DNR wanted us to and sent them in. We have found out that the guts and blood loss are about 17% to 19% of a bears body weight.
