Bear Harvest Quotas for the 2014 Season are out.

Summary: From the DNR

The department recommends a harvest quota of 4700 bears and a harvest permit level of 10,460. In individual management units the recommended 2014 permit levels are: A)2100 B)1,010 C)5,100 D)2,250. These quota levels are intended to stabilize the bear population in units A,B,C and to decrease the population in unit D due to large increase in nuisance bear complaints there. Permit levels are based on the recommended 2014 quota and hunter success rates over the last 3 years, and would be an increase of 22% compared to 2013.


Finally they are giving out more tags in Zone D, hopefully we can capitalize on this and get the massive bear population down to size. Glad to hear they are giving out more tags .

Look at the numbers..... Zone A is a big drop what is typically issued and zone B is a drop too.

Zone has gone up but zone C is almost doubled what is typically given.

So yeah more permits in aggregate but zone A and B are drops and the bear population is thriving. If C wasn't risen so much the number of permits would less.

I think it's a bad move dropping A and B.

I just went back and checked numbers....

Starting with the 2011 and thru the 2014 (current ) season look at the permit numbers.

Zone A 3465 3425 2130 2100
Zone B 1510 1335 690 1010
Zone C 2550 2970 4110 5100
Zone D 1480 1285 1630 2250

Here is the harvest success for 2011 and 2012 don't have 2013.....

Zone A 46% 56%
Zone B 64% 63%
Zone C 28% 27%
Zone D 66% 81%

If my memeory serves right this trend is about the same back to the 2009 season? Cant say for sure and have to9 run quick but will look this up later.

Draw your own conclusion but I'm seeing token permits thrown at zone C and honestly zone A and B should have risen like zone D did.

I live in B but with-in 10 miles east of the A boarder I can say with great confidence the bear population is fine in A and B. Permit levels don't need to rise drastically but sure don't need to drop from the past year numbers.

I don't kow why they lowered the B zone. All I ever hear is there are so many bear in zone B and hardly any fawn survival. Also, unit A could use a good cleaning too.
