Going thru old trail cam pictures found where passing bear would rub or sniff this one small tree.
Camera was placed in a very narrow pinch between two large ridges, thought it would be a good natural deer crossing but never got the pictures I expected. A lot of other bear pictures showed where they just walked thru, but probably rubbed and/or sniffed the tree to fast before the camera could re-arm again.

Yes... They will actually sometimes rub fur off down to the skin in spots...
They also have scratching trees that have claw marks from 4 to 7 feet up depending on bear size.

yes, bears will rub the same trees from year to year....almost like a scent/sign post marker. Like Dan said have seen trees clawed from year to year too. Most trees are larger in diameter than this tree.....don't know why they picked this tree or another one, but multiple bears will use a "scratching tree".

Re: Bear Rub
Keep in mind....there is no bait in this location. Thought it would be a good natural deer crossing but never got the big buck picture crossing only small amount of does and bucks. Have at least 30 other pics of bear from that year from this camera. Bears just weren't rubbing the tree or near it.
