Started out the bear season with a BANG!! Literally..

Unread postby natvbearhntr » Mon Sep 02, 2013 1:22 am

Got woken up this morning, 1st day of bear hunting for me, with loud thunder. It started raining then started pouring and it still is coming down pretty good. If I decided to go out today I'd be completely soaked by the time I got all my equipment to the stand. Oh well shoot for tomorrow. One a side note do any of you bear hunt in rain/thunderstorm?

No bears here, but I deer hunt from a stand in the rain.

I had my biggest bear come in right after a rain storm had let up. I had luckily timed it right that I was in my tree a mere 1/2 hour and the rain stopped. The bad part was the angle the bear took into the bait, he was able to get a whiff of me and off he went.

My experience is most bears will hunker down and wait out a storm, bears feel uncomfortable, to many distractions with the rain, thunder and lightning.

I did end up getting out in the stand but did have any luck. On the second night I had activity but it was just before it was really dark and I couldn't see anything, just heard a lot of rustling in the woods beyond my bait.

So far no luck in the stand. The only live action I have had was a mom and 3 cubs came into the bait on Wednesday. It was fun to watch. It has been miserably hot this past week so I am hoping for some cooler temps in the next few weeks. I have off work starting september 16th through the 30th so hopefully things get better. One got got a 200lb bear on Wednesday and another one shot a bear but could not recover it.
