Question for you bear hunters

Unread postby dreaming bucks » Thu Aug 29, 2013 12:55 am

I have never hunted or baited a bear.
my question is..... why do you guys pile logs or brush around your bait piles? Is it to try & deter other critters from robbing your baits? Just curious...thanks.

You want the bear to work at getting his meal. This gives you more chances for a shot. You don't want the bear to come in and drag the bait out of sight. Another thing to keep in mind, you don't' want to give the bear a big meal you want to keep the bear hungry, so he will keep coming back to an easy meal.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Also you use logs to keep racoons, ravens, etc. out from stealing the bait. Big heavy logs cut to 5-6 feet can be used for judging size of bear. Most bears can move logs but a smaller cub etc. have a hard time moving big heavy logs. Plus if the logs are torn apart you know you had a bear hit.

Covering the bait also keeps it somewhat dry should it rain.

Yes to all the above. Also in WI your bait needs to be in a hole or covered in a hollow stump to keep deer from eating it. Kinda dumb though because once the bait is open all bets are off. Same goes for little critters....

The main reason is to keep other critters out. The logs don't stop a bear at all. Most bears walk in and just toss them to the side in one easy motion. Keeping the bait somewhat dry until it starts getting hit is a bonus too...

Pretty impressive watching a 100 pound bear lay on the bait and take one paw and swat the logs to the side!! Logs that you had all you could do to move yourself!! Their strength is amazing!!
