Thinking of bear hunting already

Unread postby djl » Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:21 pm

Ran across some footage of bear baiting, four wheeling, cam pics etc. and I am fired up for the upcoming season. I should get drawn this year in MN as I have 3 pts. Didn't get drawn for turkey hunting so I think I will take vacation for the first week.
Half the fun of bear hunting is the baiting process and checking the camera IMO. Of course I like the feeling one gets when climbing out of the stand at dark.

Anybody else getting fired up?

I will be doing it archery as well. Last time, 3 years ago, I passed on several small bears and never did get one. That was ok though. Just love being out there.

With the gas prices so high I may run up the week before and establish two bait sites. Than go up for opener and hit it hard with scents and bait. Not sure if that will work but I have had baits go dry when starting too soon. It probably had more to do with acorns dropping than anything but I think it is reasonable to open a bait in one week.

I hear you on the gas prices... I drive 8 or 9 hours one way to bait when I hunt Minnesota and I bait once a week.

Hopefully prices will be down.

note; Halescorners unleaded gas was .10 cents more than Fox lake area gas station.

Gas prices are so much like a scam.........

Like I said before, "I didnt vote for him"............

I been thinking of going again ever since 07, my first hunt. Last year this time and right now been thinking of a spring bear hunt. Met a guy with Dan last year in Oconomowoc, Andy Rasmussen, out in Idaho. He is a houndsman. Would love to go chase bear with him this spring.

Never did a Spring hunt. I'll have to wait until my girls are out of school. That is something I definately have to do though. A hunt with hounds out west would be awesome.

Got hooked up with what we thought was a guide last year. 'Thought' being the key word. I think he spewed more lies than Obama. We did meet some really good folks at the motel we stayed at, and they introduced us to their guide. It wasn't a total loss at least. Everyone we talked to was very pleased with the guide we're using this year, most were repeat customers. Several guys from WI and an old guy from NY that have been going thru him for several years. I chalked it up as a learning experience. Always looking to learn more tho, so any advice or suggestions for a better hunt are welcome :)

There are some horrible guides in Northern Minnesota. I have had a few run ins myself.

Yes have to be careful. About 16 years ago I hooked up with a guide in northern MN and that was the last time for me. Ever since I have been doing it myself along with my brother in law and brother. It is a lot more fun and rewarding.

The time I was with the guide he took me to the stand and said it was hit. I said it didn't look like it. He said there was some candy missing off the top. I gave him the benefit of doubt and sat that stand for 5 days without seeing anything other than chipmunks stealing the candy pieces off the top and one deer coming by at that magic hour. What he said was a fresh bait turned out to have been hunted hard for a couple weeks with one guy taking a bear off of it. Funny what you find out the last day at a party with previous hunters.

Also, if a bait is being hit by a decent size bear you will know it. Back than I really didn't know but had my doubts. Cameras help for sure but even if you don't have cameras you can tell by how far the heavy logs are thrown, tracks etc.

Oh well, it was a learning experience and I was hooked.
