2012 Minnesota Bear Hunt
It was a weird but yet successful year. Baits were hot 3 days before the season then they went stone cold for 6 days. I'll talk about that In another thread. Anyhow we had 3 hunters and we got 2 bear. I got mine opening day (September 1st). 1st time I've shot a bear opening day since my 1st year bear hunting In 1989. In 2010 I filmed my 1st bear. I also filmed this one too. The footage Is awesome when the arrow hits the bear!! Wish I knew how to upload the video to my computer. Larry who got the other bear got his September 9th. Larry and my sister In law hunted through Monday (Labor Day) and headed back home and came back up on the 7th. I stayed all week trying to get the baits going for them. My dad also joined In on the help. It paid off as we finally got the baits (3 In particular) going good. We put my sister In law on the hottest one of the 3 on Saturday (September 8th) and nothing showed. Go figure, I couldn't believe It!! I was ticked as were trying to get her, her 1st bear. This bear showed up for 6 days straight anywhere from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. It never missed a day. It happened to miss the most Important one though. We put Larry on the 2nd best bait and his showed. We recovered his the next morning on Sunday as we were unsure of the hit that night.
My whole goal this year was to get my daughter on a bear bloodtrail. This was her 1st year at bear camp while I was hunting. She was with last year also but I wasn't hunting and also no one shot a bear while she was there. Anyhow my dream came true.
Here's a few pics of the entire hunt.
My daughter getting what looks like some sort of education from Grandpa.
My daughter asked me to braid her hair the 2nd week of baiting. I don't do braids, just pony tails. Surprisingly my dad (Grandpa) did know how to some what. I was Impressed!
Our future bear hunters. My daughter and 2 nephews posing for a pic at camp. The other guy Is a hunting buddy of ours that doesn't bear hunt (yet).
Trail cam picture of my daughter helping out at the bait site.
Trail cam picture of my camo that I wear all the time, Enigma Camo. I love this stuff!! A link to this camo Is In my signature If your Interested In this camo. This picture Is of me putting out some goodies In front of the bait before I crawled Into the tree for the hunt.
My Minnesota Bear (176 pound dressed dry sow). She ran 115 yards on a double lung hit. On the video It shows the bear completely roll over when I hit her with my 704 grain arrow. The arrow went through the chest cavity and hit the off side leg bone. She let out a huge growl when the arrow hit her. These pics don't do this bear a whole lot of justice. She was fairly wide and deep. 5 Inches of fat on her and back. To me looking at the pictures It looks like she's about 90 pounds. Camera taker needs to be at ground level when taking pics Instead of standing so close to me. I also didn't/couldn't hardly curve the head to face It forward or stretch her out. She was way stiff. Never have I saw an animal so stiff.
These pictures show her actual size a little better. She was about 5.5 tall.
Here are some trail cam pictures from the day before of her. I think she's an older sow (10+ or so years old). Her head Is of pretty good size for a sow. Again you can see her actual size a little better compared to the kill pics with me with her.
The start of the bloodtrail with us tracking.
The kiddo's waving/smiling at the camera on the drag out.
A few beers and drinks being had after skinning and quartering my bear out.
Our close family friend/hunting buddy Larry with his 254 pound dressed bear. This bear will be close to P&Y. The bear Is just about 7 feet long. Front pads are big, 4 5/8ths wide.
My 2 nephews trying to drag him after we drug the bear out. We drug this bear about 500 yards to the ditch here. It was a huge work out In some nasty thick crap. My daughter and g/f left 4 days before this so they couldn't get In on the action.

Congrats on the great looking bear.
The kid pictures and having them involved highlights the story. Too Cool.
Acorns putting a hurt on the baits by you?
