WI Bear Hunt
For those that hunt bear in WI, my neighbor (farmer) told me I should start putting in for a bear permit to kill the bears around our hood here in western WI. We see a lot of bears almost week we see 1 or 2 or even 3 running across a the field. I have never hunted bears or even put in for points. My question is - do I really need to wait almost 7 years to draw a tag - that seems crazy to me.
Looking for thoughts and how do I go about applying for a tag that wont take 7 years to get.
Appreciate the advise

thanks Dan
Seems crazy to me. Looks like the DNR needs to fix the bear licensing as well. Is there a Dr. Bear we can hire

Yep, C tags come a lot faster. My biggest bear came from the C-zone

Re: WI Bear Hunt
I wrote the DNR last year and inquired as to the length of time for a tag. I have land in western WI and frankly am over run with bear. They told me that the reason for the long wait is because of the high demand of people wanting to shoot a bear. With that said I am now up to 4 preference points wishing I would have started years ago.

Re: WI Bear Hunt
That long wait is why Wisconsin is known for the biggest bears.

Re: WI Bear Hunt
Back in 1984 & 85 the Wisconsin bear season was shut down because the bear population was so low. Since then, this bear program is one of Wisconsin's greatest big game success stories, I think Wisconsin has done a great job in managing our bear hunts. I hope it stays the same. If you want to go on yearly bear hunts or every 2, 3 years there is always Minnesota and Canada.

Re: WI Bear Hunt
If you really want to shoot a bear, I'd start applying for MN. My college roommate has gotten a bear tag every single year that he's hunted. He gets drawn every other year, and the years he doesn't get drawn he's always been able to snatch up a leftover tag that wasn't purchased as soon as they go on sale to the general public.
I started applying for zone D in WI thinking it'd be the same thing. I was shocked when I got my third preference point, assuming I must get drawn by then. Apparently that's not the case, and I'm kind of bummed. So now I'll start applying for MN and there's a pretty good chance I'll still get drawn for that state before WI.
