I never had the desire to shoot a bear until the 2010 season when I helped my wife's dad bait. Checking cameras, running bait and just waiting to see what showed up next was exciting. So this was my first bear taken in 2010. It was a 225lbs boar. Since then I have been trying to learn new ways to judge size but when this guy came through the woods I thought he was 500lbs! It was a fun learning experience. I took with bow at less than 10 yards.

Re: My First Bear.
Congratulation's on your 1st bear!! Nice looking 1st bear to boot!! Many people over estimate the size of a bear, your not alone there. It seems here In Minnesota everybody shoots a 300lb bear every year. It gets pretty comical. Again, congratulation's on your bear and best of luck In your new found addiction. It was a 225lbs boar. Since then I have been trying to learn new ways to judge size but when this guy came through the woods I thought he was 500lbs!

Re: My First Bear.
Thanks everyone. One of the things I did last season was drove a T post in the ground next to my bait. Where the post is green it measures 36", then there is a white tip that measures 39" to the tip. I passed on several small bear this year and had a few come in after hours that were higher than the 39" mark at their back height.

Re: My First Bear.
Congrats on a nice bear... Nothing wrong with a 225 pound boar.
As far as estimating bear size, I like to use a stick that is a certain lenth placed by the bait. Or a height marked on a tree.
One thing is for sure, when a monster bear comes in there will be no doubt its a shooter. Its the ones that are inbetween that are hard to judge. I was fortunate enough to get a 500 pound bear many years ago and it looked like a big black volkswagon coming thru the woods.
