story for bear hunters

Unread postby tim » Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:38 am

well i know nothing about bears/bear hunting/scores . but recently a buddy of mine had a bear skull beatled out for a guy that he hunts with and when he picked it up the taxidermist asked him if it was truly a black bear skull. puzzled my friend said of course it was it was killed in northern wisconsin this year and weighed 500 something lbs. the taxidermist proceeded to tell him he has never seen a skull this big in all his years as a taxidermist. so he said he scored it and came up with 23"( this didnt mean much to me cause i know nothing about bears) so my buddy looked it up in the buck and bear record books and if that score is true it will be # 2 in wisconsin, so he is going to have it scored i guess. thought id pass this along in case anyone was interested . the reason he questioned the species of skull i guess cause he said it had a thick bony area going down the center of the skull(i dont know what a normal one looks like though) i appologize for my ignorance on the subject just wanted to pass along........

23" is a whopper of a black bear. Anything over 20" is considered real good.....23" is almost unheard of.

18" is min for P&Y

That would be a heck of a kill if the official score matches the taxidermists!

Oh my, that's huge!! It's pretty hard to mess up a score on a bear skull. What a great bear that Is!! Wisconsin sure has some giants.
