Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on making buck bedding better on your land... My land is pretty much all hill country... It has a several ridges that run in all directions and then little points that jet out off of these ridges...
My main question is this, would it be a good idea to drop a tree or two on these little points that jet out ? That way the bucks have a little something to hide behind as they are bedded there....
Any other ideas to improve buck bedding ?

Re: To help buck bedding
Dropping trees horizontal can work well, but the tree has to be at the right spot on the hill to catch the thermal tunnel. A better trick would be to remove some trees from the top from the elevation the bucks bed up to the top. Thick cover above them generally makes better bedding, but they like to see below. Also adding water holes at the tops of cuts between the points will give the bucks added reason to want to bed there. The thick top cover should extend from the buck bedding to the edge of the water hole and have a distance no greater than 400 yards from the beds, preferably closer, if you plan to hunt the occasionally.

Re: To help buck bedding
Thanks for the tips Dan... I'm getting layed off again this year for 6 weeks @ x-mas time, so hopefully I can get into the woods & drop some trees for background cover.. I put a couple small waterholes in this year, but hope to make a nice big one next spring so it has no problem staying full all year....

Just do yourself a favor and really think about wind direction and exact placment of the water holes you put in...
I see a lot of guys rush to put a water hole in and its in the wrong position.

Maybe dreaming bucks can post some aerial/topo pics of where he wants to do this and dan and others can comment on locations and why things should be done in certain places. This would make a nice little case study to learn from.

Re: To help buck bedding
Would does prefer to bed in the middle of these fallen trees while bucks prefer to bed in front of them? I am also doing some chainsaw work and interested in improving these bedding points in hill country.

Footballer, each situation is different, but most of the time I would expect the deer (doe or buck) to bed behind a fallen tree (or above) The does usually seem to bed higher than the bucks though, and don't use things like a tree as often.
